Jim earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan in 1975 and graduated Wayne State Law School in 1979. He began his legal career as an attorney with the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office, under L. Brooks Patterson. He spent four years there before leaving for private practice, where he represented criminal defendants, parties in divorces, juvenile offenders and many small business clients. In 1986, Judge Margaret Schaeffer asked him to join the 47th District Court staff as a part-time magistrate. A year later he jumped into the field of Intellectual Property Law, where he specialized in trademark and copyright law. As a result of his career path Jim had the great fortune of gaining experience not only in most of the courts in the metro Detroit area, but also spent approximately 15 years practicing in federal courts across the country.
